Wood
Overall: 3/8 x 18 in. ( 1 x 45.7 cm )

The seal of the Bronx is derived from the family crest of Jonas Bronck (1600-1643), for whom the borough is named. This hand-carved re-creation of the crest was done in the early 1930's by an artist under the federal sponsorship of the W. P. A. program. The motto, "Ne Cede Malis" means "Yield not to evil."
DescriptionCircular carved wooden Bronx Seal; seal with a shield in the center with a sun with eyes rising over water, a banner below the shield carved, "NE CEDE MALIS," and a spread eagle above on a demi-globe, all in a laurel garland; two metal hooks screwed into the reverse.
