DescriptionGilt bronze struck medal with head of George Washington facing left in oval medallion within wreath, supported at base by eagle with upraised wings and at either side by winged cherubs holding a circlet of thirteen stars over Washington's head and palm branches; surrounding legend: "MDCCLXXCI./FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE, FIRST IN THE HEARTS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN." Reverse depicts group of five allegorical female figures, America with Liberty cap at center presenting wreaths of Art and Mechanics left and Commerce and Agriculture right; legend above: "INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION"; inscription in exergue: "PHILADELPHIA 1876."MarkingsInscription: obverse, at lower left below exergual line: " H.
