DescriptionWorld War I medal. Bronze medal on multicolored ribbon. Medal depicts American eagle with heraldic shield with date at upper corners "AD", at left, and "1916", at right, divided in halves by sword at center and containing seals of Great Britain and her colonies (ship), France (rooster), Italy (Cross of Savoy), Montenegro (lion's head), Russia (bear), Belgium (lion), Japan (rising sun), and Serbia (four letters "E" that are the first letters of her motto "Union creates strength"); legend around line border containing thirteen stars (original American states): "DO RIGHT AND FEAR NO MAN" (inspired by inscription on one of George Washington's dress swords). Reverse depicts shield with thirteen stars, text around the border reads: "THAT GOVERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE SHALL NOT PERISH"ClassificationsMEDALS
