Catherine M. Thayer, the daughter of William and Adeline (Woodard) Thayer, was married to Isaac Augustus Wetherby, the artist, in February of 1846. From 1835 to 1846 Wetherby had his studio in Boston, and it was probably there that he painted this portrait of the young woman he would later marry. The portrait was a gift to the New-York Historical Society from the couple's daughter.
