Wilhelmine Joan Steeg was the daughter of Francis Steeg and Emma A. (Scheidweiler) Steeg of New York. She married J. Phillip Schmand (1871-1942) on December 27, 1911. In 1943 Mrs. Schmand, who was an associate member of New-York Historical Society from that year until her death, gave the New-York Historical Society a number of portraits by her husband who had died the year before; among these were five of herself.
