The subject was born in Sidney, New York, the sixth son of William Strong Johnston and Frances (Dickerman) Johnston. Coming to New York in 1853 he found employment in a jewelry store and five years later became a partner of the firm. He became a life member of The New-York Historical Society in 1862.
