The subject was born in England and entered the British army at an early age. He became a member of Parliament in 1751 but in 1752 joined the 47th Foot Guards, of which he was lieutenant colonel, in Nova Scotia. He served as lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia and was second in command of the Quebec expedition in 1759. In 1761 he was made a major general and governor of New York, which position he held until 1763. He then returned to England.
