This Naval officer's dress coat was worn by George Elmore Ide, whoe served from 1861-1901. The Society also owns other items which are part of this uniform.
DescriptionDark blue or black wool Naval officer's double-breasted tailcoat with 1" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye); metal epaulette attachments at the shoulders; 9 buttons down the front on each side; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with 3 bands of gilt lacing around the wrists with 1 star above the lacing; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center of the waistliine, a button at the bottom of each tail; all buttons cast with an eagle perched on an anchor, encircled by stars; lined with matching wool at the breasts, with horizontal slit pocket at the left breast, lightly padded and quilted, remainder of coat lined with white silk; each tail has a vertical slit pocket inside near the center.Markingsstamped: reverse of each button: "JOSH STARKEY / LONDON / 23 CONDUIT St.
