This tailcoat was worn by Colonel Montgomery Schuyler (1877-1955) while he served as Councillor of Embassy in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 1907-1909.
DescriptionBlack wool Colonel's single-breasted tailcoat, with 3 1/4" closed stand-up collar (3 sets hooks and eyes) embroidered in metal thread with feathered leaves, 8 metal buttons down the left front chest, 7 black silk- covered buttons down the front of the right front chest which fasten to buttonholes on the reverse of left front buttons, a hook and eye at the waistline beneath the buttons; outer buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle with "C" on its shield, clutching arrows and a branch in its talons; closed cuff sleeves are embroidered in metal thread with feathered leaves; 4 panels on the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, between 2 false pockets with flaps embroidered in metal thread with feathered leaves, a button at the bottom of each tail; outer edges of collar, cuffs, bodice and tails trimmed with gilt lace; coat lined with black silk, sleeves lined with white silk, horizontal slit pockets at both breasts.Markingscast: obverse of each button: "C"
