According to the accession records, this chapeau was worn by John Meury (1827-1887), grandfather of the donor. Meury served as Chaplain of the Staten Island-based 32nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also known as the "1st California Regiment", of the New York State Militia, from November 11, 1881, until the time of his death.
DescriptionBlack beaver (textile) chapeau with rigid crown with cock and fan tied together on either side; capsule-shaped cockade edged with pleated black silk, with embroidered insignia at center consisting of a shield surmounted by an eagle with "EXCELSIOR" on banner below; gold bullion tassel at each corner; black ostrich feathers on crest; black leather sweatband and purple silk lining.
Markingsembroidered: on cockade: "EXCELSIOR" printed: on lining: "BAKER & McKENNEY, / MILITARY GOODS, / 141 / GRAND ST. / NEW-YORK."
