The subject, son of William McKesson, was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was probably named after his uncle, John (1734-96), a prominent lawyer in New York and clerk of the Provincial Congress (1775-77). After graduating from Dickinson College in 1792, the subject joined his uncle in New York and was admitted as counsellor in the court of common pleas in 1798. He was one of the incorporators of The New-York Historical Society in 1809.
