John Chapman

1808–1890
BiographyAs a youth, John Chapman studied with the artists George Cooke and Charles Bird King. In 1827 he began his professional career as a painter in Winchester, Virginia, but seeking further training he went to Philadelphia and then to Italy. He was also an accomplished engraver, book illustrator, and one of the first American artists to take up etching.
