DeWitt McClellan Lockman

American, 1870 – 1957
BiographyBest known for his portraits DeWitt McClellan Lockman painted President Calvin Coolidge, General of the Armies John J. Pershing and Elihu Root, among others.

Born in Brooklyn, he studied in New York and Europe. His teachers included James H. Beard (1812-1893), Nelson N. Bickford (1846-1943), and William Sartain (1843-1924).

He resided for many years at the Gainsborough Studios on West 59th Street and participated in many arts organizations. He served as president of the National Association of Portrait Painters, National Academy of Design (1949-1950), Allied Artists of America, and Associates of the Art Commission of New York, and served as a trustee of the New-York Historical Society (1929-1957) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1931 he became a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
