This trophy was awarded to champion swimmer Gertrude Ederle, who set seven world records at a single swim in 1922 at Brighton Beach, New York. She was the first woman to swim across the English Channel from France to England in 1926, beating the previous men’s world record by 1 hour and 59 minutes. When she returned to New York, she was honored by a ticker-tape parade. Ederle enjoyed widespread celebrity throughout her lifetime, earning the moniker of “America’s best girl” from President Calvin Coolidge. Erdele won three medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics and accrued 29 amateur national and world records between 1921 and 1925.
