The subject was a well-known painter and photographer in New York in the 1870s, maintaining a studio at 65 Third Avenue. At the time of his death, he lived in Far Rockaway, Long Island, and his studio was on 23rd Street in Manhattan. His portrait was a gift to the New-York Historical Society from his son.
