The pieces offered in this donation represent a significant portion of a formal porcelain dinner service owned by Luman Reed (1787-1836). Reed was a wealthy New York City dry goods merchant who assembled one of the United States’ earliest American art collections. An active patron, he befriended artists such as Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand and was a leading promoter of Hudson River School painters.
