Glazed and painted porcelain

This collection is a formal porcelain dinner service owned by Luman Reed (1787-1836). Reed was a wealthy New York City dry goods merchant who assembled one of the United States’ earliest American art collections.
DescriptionCream-colored glazed porcelain dinner service plates, platters, cups, saucers, dishes, and tureens decorated with wide bands of light blue along bodies and rims accented with painted gold ribbons and Greek key borders, and with painted gold central medallions. Most of the porcelain is in generally good condition, although the salad bowl shows evidence of repair. Most of the service pieces are unmarked. At least one salad plate is stamped “Tiffany & Co. / New-York,” and was likely a later replacement.
