The subject and her sister, Elizabeth, Duchess of Hamilton and Argyll, were once pronounced "the handsomest women alive." They were the daughters of John Gunning of Castle Coote, County Roscommon, Ireland, and the Honorable Bridget Bourke, daughter of the sixth Viscount Mayo. On March 5, 1752, Maria was married to George William, the sixth Earl of Coventry and a distant cousin of William Coventry Henry Waddell.
