This portrait study of the clergyman and scientist Joseph Priestley is related to a completed portrait of the subject in the American Philosophical Society. Peale's study of Priestley remained in his possession and passed into the collection of the Peale Museum; it was purchased by the donor at the sale of that museum in 1854.
