Nelson Rockefeller (1908-79), Republican, was Governor of NY (1959-73), and Vice President of the US under Gerald Ford (after the resignation of Richard Nixon) (1974-77). He made unsuccessful bids to win the Republican nomination for President in 1960, 1964, 1968. Jacob Javits (1904-86), liberal Republican, was in the US House of Representatives from 1947-54, and US Senate, 1957-81. The two were allies. This most likely represents the 1962 campaign when Rockefeller ran for Governor and Javits for Senator.
