Elihu Root (1845-1937) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He served as Secretary of War under McKinley and Roosevelt (1899-1903) and as Secretary of State under Roosevelt (1905-1909). From 1909- 1915 he was a Republican Senator from New York. This medal was issued in remembrance of Root's visit to Peru during his unprecedented diplomatic tour of South America in 1906.
DescriptionGilt bronze struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of Root with surrounding legend: "ELIHU ROOT, SECRETARIO DE ESTADO DE LOS EE. UU. DE AMERICA." Reverse depicts seal of Peru at top right with palm and laurel branch, surmounted by wreath; inscription at left: "RECUERDO/DE SU/VISITA/AL PERU/SEPTEMBRE DE/1906."
