This posthumous portrait of Morgan was commissioned by the New York publisher Bantam Books as the cover illustration for their 1956 paperback edition of Frederick Lewis Allen's "The Great Pierpont Morgan." Kinstler most likely based his portrait on the famous 1903 photograph of Morgan by Edward Steichen, which served as the frontispiece for the 1st edition of Frederick Allen's 1949 biography.
