The subject was the son of Peter Praa Van Zandt (1730-1812), a prominent New York merchant and a major in the Continental Army, and Sarah (Marschalk) Van Zandt. He lived with his wife, née Sarah Ann Janeway, and their ten children at 135 Greene Street, New York. This portrait may be a copy of an original by John Trumbull. It is not included in Theodore Sizer's "Checklist" in "The Works of Colonel John Trumbull" (1967).
