A native of Hamburg, Germany, the subject came to the United States in 1894 when he joined the banking firm of Kuhn, Loeb and Company. In 1895 he married Frieda, the daughter of Jacob H. Schiff, the head of the firm. A generous philanthropist, he was chairman of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropies of New York City and a director of the Henry Street Settlement House. He was also interested in art and became a member of the corporation of the Museum of Modern Art.
