Born in Surrey, England, the son of William and Mary Stanford prepared for the Baptist ministry in his native land and was ordained in 1781. Five years later he came to the United States, finally settling in New York in 1789. In 1812 he became chaplain of the New York State Prison, followed by additional work at the poorhouse and at hospitals. He was known for his humanitarian efforts, such as the founding of the House of Refuge for youthful offenders. The Society owns many of his papers.
