The subject was born in Vrpolje, Croatia, the son of a carpenter. After an early apprenticeship to a marble cutter he studied art in Vienna. His sculpture achieved international acclaim in Europe in the years following World War I, and from 1923 to 1942 he was rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. His sculpture first came to the attention of Americans in 1925 when a large exhibition of his work was presented by the Brooklyn Museum.
