The subject of this portrait served as a captain in the French navy for twenty-five years before being appointed governor of Louisiana in 1753. The miniature was copied from a contemporary pastel portrait by an unidentified French artist (illustrated in Fortier, "A History of Louisiana," I, 1904, opp. p. 154). It is attributed to Aline Alaux because of its stylistic similarities with her signed miniature of Pierre de Rigaud.
