This oil painting, by an unidentified artist, was copied from a small engraving taken from a painting by the well-known historical painter Alonzo Chappel, and published in New York in 1855 by the firm of Martin & Johnson.
DescriptionThis scene depicts an officer of the Continental Army reading the death warrant to major John André, adjutant-general of the British Army in North America, in his prison quarters in the Casparus Mabie tavern at Tappan, New York, in early October 1780.
