This painting was executed under the Works Project Administration, a government organization that provided employment for artists during the Depression. St. Paul's Chapel was the only intact pre-Revolutionary public building in New York at the time of this painting. It is silhouetted dramatically against several 20th century buildings, among them the Woolworth building (1913).
