The subject was one of the nine children of the Rev. Eugene Augustus Hoffman and Mary Crooke (Elmendorf) Hoffman of New Brunswick, N.J. He studied astronomy at Johns Hopkins University and taught that subject there for a few years, until management of his father's extensive properties in New York demanded his full attention. In 1901 he became a life member of New-York Historical Society and two years later succeeded his father as its president, serving 1903-1912.
