The artist Joseph Warin accompanied General Victor Collot, a French officer, on a journery through the western part of the United States in 1796 for the purpose of gathering information for the French minister at Philadelphia. Collot's published account of his journey contains an interesting description of Natchez and of the Gayoso Batter marked on the watercolor.
