This is a modern reconstruction by the artist from contemporary data of the gilded lead statue of King George III, which was executed by Joseph Wilton (1722-1803) for the New York Assembly and erected in Bowling Green, New York City, on August 16, 1770. The statue was pulled down by the Americans on July 9, 1776, after the Declaration of Independence had been read to the Continental Army at New York. Lead fragments of the statue are owned by The New-York Historical Society.
