The subject was the son of Francis T. and Mary (Fields) Luqueer. His father was a hardware merchant in Hanover Square in New York. John Luqueer was the founder and first president of the Adriatic Fire Insurance Co. of New York, which was chartered in 1858. He was also president of the Fireman's Insurance Co. and of the Greenwich Savings Bank. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandnephew.
