Andrew Stevenson was one of the first English potters to transfer print American scenes onto pottery. He based some of his designs on views painted by William Guy Wall and engraved by John Hill in the Hudson River Portfolio. This view contrasts pastoral Brooklyn with the urban bustle of lower Manhattan. In the foreground is Red Hook, with the windmill and warehouses of Pierrepont's gin distillery to the right and Cornell's millpond at center.
DescriptionMolded octagonal pearlware platter with dark blue transfer print of New York from the Heights near Brooklyn; floral and scrollwork border; central image with pastoral scene in foreground, river with ships near center, and the buildings of lower Manhattan in the distance. (Larsen, 3rd ed. no. 97)
Markingsimpressed: on underside of platter: "A. STEVENSON WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE" around crown transfer-printed: in blue on underside of platter rim: Plaque held by eagle with "NEW YORK/from Heights near/BROOKLYN/By W G Wall Esqr"
