These objects were excavated in 1923 by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse pit near the Revolutionary War barracks at West Point, a series of forts and barracks built in Orange County, New York by the Continental Army. The Vermont cent probably belonged to a Federal soldier stationed at West Point after the Revolution.
DescriptionIron spikes; two iron knee-breech buckles: one has a square frame; the other has a rectangular frame; a brass buckle; an iron ice creeper; four iron grapeshot; three musket flints; a brass scabbard hook and brass scabbard point; three lead musket balls; one small green glass vial; an iron screw; an iron jacknife; an oval sleeve link with a glass head; a green glass gem; a brass Jew's harp; two copper British coins with a profile bust on front: one of the coins is inscribed on both sides and has a profile bust of King George III on front and a female figure of Britannia on back, holding a staff and leaning on a shield; a silver Spanish coin with inscriptions and symbols on both sides; a copper Vermont coin is inscribed on both sides and has a profile bust of King George on front.Markingsstamped: (74), on front of coin: "GEORGIVS III REX"; on back: "BRITANNIA/1775" (figure of Britannia on back)
