Jane Keteltas, the daughter of Abraham Keteltas and Jeanne (d'Honneur) Keteltas, was married to James Beekman in 1752 and bore him ten children. Painted as a companion to the portrait of James Beekman (1962.64), this picture was for some reason in need of retouching only five years later, according to an entry in James Beekman's account book which states that he paid John Durand L1.10.00 "for Altering my Wifes Picture." James Beekman ordered the picture's frame from New York City carver Stephen Dwight.
