Captain Johannes Schuyler (1668-1747) was the sixth and youngest son of Philip Pieterse Schuyler, founder of the Schuyler family in America, and Margarita (Van Slichtenhorst) Schuyler. He married Elizabeth (Staats) Wendell (1659–1737), daughter of Major Abraham Staats and Katrina (Jorhemse) Staats, and widow of Johannes Wendell (1649–1691), on April 25, 1695. From 1703 to 1706 Captain Schuyler was mayor of Albany. This double portrait was a gift to the Society from the subjects' great-great-great-grandson.
