The subject was the son of Salem Dutcher (b. 1776) and the grandson of William Dutcher of Westchester County, New York. His father was in the lumber trade in Albany, and there young Salem grew up. By 1841 he was listed in the New York City Directory as a partner in the law firm of Dutcher, Reynolds and Platt, Attorneys, at the Merchants Exchange. This unsigned portrait is attributed to Collins because of its stylistic similarity to a signed portrait by the artist in the Society's collection.
