During the 1850s Richards went on sketching trips up the Hudson and into the Catskills and Adirondacks in 1853, 1855, 1857, and 1859. His sketching itinerary in the summer of 1853 included West Point, Catskill, Cauterskill (Kaaterskill) Falls, and Catskill Mountain Clove.
