The arm terminals, design of the medial stretcher, and absence of a groove to define the front of the spindle platform suggest that this chair was made near the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. The bow (crest rail) of this chair may be a late 19th century replacement, as indicated by the centered groove on the face.
DescriptionBlack painted Windsor highchair; sack-back with curved crest rail and five full-length spindles piercing lower horizontal rail, which curves forward on either side to form arms; turned front arm supports; wide plank seat on splayed, vase-turned legs; side stretchers and single medial stretcher with bulbous center.
