A native of Huntville, Alabama, Morgan was a Confederate cavalry commander in the Civil War. In September, 1864, while preparing for a raid on Knoxville, he was surprised and killed by Union forces near Greenville, Tennesee.

InscribedFrom the former mount: "Genl. John H. Morgan, on a Raid. This sketch is probably an original, owned immediately after the Civil War by Conf. Major A. J. Kercheval, of Martinsburg, WVa., and later by Col. Alex. R. Boteler of Gen. Lee's staff, who copied it in oil. Although somewhat careless in part, the sketch was pronounced a very faithful one by many who saw or knew the famous Confederate raider."
