The Women’s Sports Foundation has received accolades from a wide range of organizations. In 1985 the Boy Scouts of America honored it with the William H. Spurgeon III Award. First bestowed in 1971, the Scouts considers it “the highest recognition for individuals and organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring Program.” The Boy Scouts of America initiated the original Exploring Program during the 1930s as a senior program for older, high school-aged scouts. Explorers went on high adventure expeditions and also mentored younger scouts. It began admitting young women to full membership in 1971. Over the decades, it evolved into an inclusive program that provided training, mentorship, and job opportunities to boys and girls ages 10 to 20 in coordination with business and community leaders.
