The subject, famous as Coco the Clown, was born in Calcutta, India, and began his circus career at the age of three. From the late 1870s until the early 1920s, when he retired, he was one of the most popular and famous performers under the Big Top. His home was in Jacksonville, Florida, and he became known as "the health and education clown" in the Florida public schools.
