This Sunday World Field Day medal was awarded to James Kirkpatrick Flack (1906–1998) during his 6th grade year at P.S. 196 in Manhattan in 1920. From 1906 to 1930 Joseph Pulitzer's Sunday World newspaper partnered with the New York City Public Schools Athletic League to sponsor bi-annual athletic Field Days in an effort to promote physical culture and sportsmanship.
Cast medals were awarded in silver and bronze to the winners of specific track and field events and other sports like swimming. Field Days proved extremely popular among public and private school students alike in New York City and in the twenty-five year span of the Field Day program approximately 65,000 medals were awarded.
