Richard Haas’s paintings are related to the large murals he created for the employee dining room of the Philip Morris Company in the basement of its headquarters at 120 Park Avenue. Each represents a segment of the 360-degree view from the 26th floor of the building. They depart from the panorama tradition in a twentieth-century manner because they were executed from a skyscraper and depict the skyline. In View of Manhattan Looking East from 42nd Street and Park Avenue, we see the East River and the borough of Queens through the empty space between various skyscrapers and construction cranes.
