The subject was the son of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States, and Sarah Van Brugh (Livingston) Jay. He studied law and practiced in New York. Like his father, he was a staunch Federalist and held several minor public offices. He was a trustee of Columbia College, his alma mater, and served as the president of the New-York Historical Society from 1840 to 1842.
