DescriptionBronze struck medallion with obverse showing uniformed bust of Ulysses Grant facing left with surrounding legend: "MAJOR GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT./JOINT RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS/DECEMBER 17. 1863."; all within ornate border of flower, fruit, wheat, laurel and oak, interspersed with thirteen stars. Reverse depicts allegorical vignette of Commerce, holding shield and cornucopia, with eagle grasping cloth at left, and looking down on two views, one labelled "VICKSBURG" to left and "CHATTANOOGA" to right and separated by trophies of war surmounted by Liberty cap; all is surrounded by border representing, as labelled, the "MISSISSIPPI RIVER" with four steamboats; thirteen stars within line border.
