John Joseph Pershing (1860-1948) commanded the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. A graduate of West Point, Pershing had previously served in the Philippines, 1909-1913 and Mexico, 1916-1917. From 1921 until his retirement in 1924, he was Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
DescriptionBronze struck medal with obverse showing bust-length portrait of General Pershing; with legend: "GENERAL PERSHING." Reverse depicts marching soldiers carrying American flag with airplanes above; inscription in exergue, flanked by laurel branches: "FOR.HONOR./.AND.LIBERTY./.OF.NATIONS."
