White was born in Emporia, Kansas, and attended the University of Kansas. In 1895 he became the proprietor of the Emporia "Gazette" which, with White as editor, became one of the most notable small-town newspapers in the United States. He also wrote a number of short stories and books; among them are "The Real Issue and Other Stories" (1896), "In Our Town" (1906), "A Certain Rich Man" (1909), and "The Changing West" (1939).
