John Watts, the son of John (1715-89) and Ann (De Lancey) Watts, was born in New York. He was the first president of New York City Hospital (1770-84), three times speaker of the New York Assembly, and a member of the U.S. Congress (1793-96). This portrait, a gift to the Society from his grandson, is based on an original by Henry Inman painted about 1830-35.
